2018 Norton 9 – Cancellation due to Weather

[Please read the entire post – for both refunds and rescheduling]

Unfortunately, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Norton 9 due to weather. There were many factors but the primary ones are related to risk, health and safety:

  • For runners, 2.1miles of the course is impassable, will not be gritted or ploughed and as the temperature is not rising before Sunday will not thaw. The most rural section of our course is solid, continuous ice (some photos below).
  • For spectators and marshals, the pavements are treacherous and the expected wind-chill is unacceptable for 3+ hours which is how long people must be on course.
  • For officials or other parts of the race organisation, we have St Johns coming from Newcastle, race timing from Blackburn, adjudicator from Barnsley. We cannot impose on them to travel.

Independent of the above, Doncaster MBC Emergency Services committee met and asked us yesterday not to proceed with the race, which we must respect. If something were to go wrong it is those services that we would be relying on and putting them at risk too.

We will be rescheduling the race this year. Our continuous streak of 30+ years will not be broken. Foot-and-mouth did not stop us in ’01, polar winds will not stop us in ’18. We will find a date that does not interfere with other local races (Ackworth Half, Darrington 5mile, Pontefract 10km have ruled out some potential weekends). We will share ASAP what our rearranged plans are, but it might take a while as there is a lot to line up.

Refunds: our ethos has always been our races are for “runners”. We keep our prices low and are always as flexible as we can be. We have taken the decision to refund all entrants and you can decide individually to re-enter the new date.

  • Online entries: Update: Refunds have been processed, it may take a few days for your bank to reflect it. Refunds will go back to the payment card, this may take quite a few days. If you have transferred since, you will need to sort that out with your friend.
  • Postal entries: Your cheques have not been cashed and will be destroyed.

Please share this post with your friends and club mates. We will be emailing all online entrants, phoning all postal entrants and posting on various Facebook groups too.

Again, we really did not want to do this but have made the call. As we say, the race will be rearranged and we will push this information to all people who entered this race.

Having said all that, now to plan the Askern 10km! Wednesday 16th May. Will post soon.

ADRC Committee.

2018 Norton 9 Number Allocation & Race Day Instructions + Weather Update

Firstly, we’ll start with the info as though the race is going ahead. Please find links to:

Collect number and returnable chip on the day; HQ open from 08.30 am – race start at 10.00am. Leave plenty of time…

Parking opposite Norton Middle School courtesy of Norton Strawberry Growers (sat nav: DN6 9DG), weather permitting. Do not park on West End Road as this forms part of the course.

Also, the start has changed to the main road from the side street so we will be congregating runners in the park and walking down just ahead of the race. Please follow the marshal’s instructions.

*** Now the weather ***

We like everyone are watching the upcoming forecast, as it stands we haven’t cancelled the race but we are mindful of many factors that could lead to that outcome. The primary problem with the course is some areas are ungritted and with the temperature not forecast to rise above 4C (even 1C) existing ice is unlikely to go. We also have to consider the medical provider (St Johns) /must/ be in attendance otherwise we are in violation of licensing and insurance.

We will email everybody ahead of the weekend what the situation is.

Should we cancel (and that has not happened yet) we would look to reschedule the race but we’d have to work with the local UKA to make sure we don’t clash with other local races.

Regards, ADRC.

2018 Norton 9 Entries now open!

Update: Course Certificate and Race License received!

Firstly, apologies for the delay. We’ve had quite some delay trying to get the course measurement certificate updated (this is required every 10 years) but hopefully we’ll get it resolved shortly. Its important to note we haven’t applied for our race license until the course measurement is resolved but that’s just a formality. The relevant bodies have been informed etc and the date is in their diaries, we’ve just been advised to get the license after the measurement is renewed.

Online entry is at Book It Zone here: 2018 Norton 9 Online Entry

Postal form here: 2018 Norton 9 Entry Form v3

Please note:

  • no entries on the day (the race hits its quota ahead of that usually anyway)
  • transfers are permitted within reason, we have to call a deadline close to the race as the chips have to be programmed etc.
  • collect number and chip on the day

Dave Bullock Memorial Relay

Invitation to all ADRC members.

On Tuesday 19th September, ADRC are going to trial a little event in the memory of our dear friend Dave Bullock. This is a fabulous suggestion from Kathie Wordsworth.

We are going to do a relay around the Norton 9 course, as this was one of Dave’s favourite races.

The intention is to have a short leg at either end of the relay (3 person team), so as to encompass everyone who wishes to have a trot.

Teams will be allocated on the night.

Leg lengths will be roughly 1.5 miles, 6 miles, and 1.5 miles to finish.

We will sort getting the middle leg runners to and from their leg if they wish.

Due to the late nights drawing in, please meet at the changing rooms at 6pm, for 6.30pm start. Should the event go ok, we will bring the date forward next year.

As Dave was an avid Leeds United fan, I feel it would be appropriate for everyone to wear blue, white and yellow (all 3 colours please), somewhere within their running kit. Ie, blue trainers, white socks, yellow top, something along those lines.

There will be a little something for all of us that attend on the night (I bet you can’t guess what).

I also think that it would be great if we all made a donation to a charitable cause on the night. I will be suggesting that ADRC match any monies raised on the evening.

Please note that this is intended be a fun night of running, as Dave always loved it when the club had a bit of a get together.

I’m sure also that once the running and showering is done, then it would be nice to raise a glass (or two) to Dave, afterwards at Norton Club.

Hope to see you there, whether it is as a runner, spectator or a helper.

Best Wishes

Paul C, (El Capitano)

Are here: 2017 Askern 10mile Results

Big congratulations to all the category winners but particularly first male, Iraitz Arrospide and first lady, Faye Banks, who both won their gender by 4 clear minutes in incredible times.

Thanks as always to St Johns, Askern Miners Welfare, supporters, runners and the officials and marshals who without these races couldn’t go ahead.

We hope you all enjoyed the race.

As usual, but no less diminished because it is year after year, a huge thanks to local running clubs, supporters, marshals, race organisers, the Welfare and the wider Askern area who make this race a success. The weather wasn’t so kind this year but we hope it didn’t dampen things.

Many of you know this /may/ be the last time this race is on in it’s current guise due to a couple of organisational challenges. Nothing is final though so we’ll let you know in due course.

Its pretty likely the Askern 10mile will go ahead too so we’ll starting making preparations for that ASAP.

Regards, ADRC.

2017 Askern 10km Entries Open

The race is being held on Wednesday 17th May @ 19:00

UPDATE: Race Full. Sorry if you have missed out. We do operate a waiting list for on-line entries via BookItZone. You can sign up and then be emailed if a place becomes available.

We know we have been pretty quiet about the Askern 10km this year. We have faced a number of challenges with the latest curve ball being we may have lost our parking at Race HQ due to building works. We now know this is unlikely to start prior to the race so we have decided to put this race on for one last time in its current guise.

We have also previously reduced the entry limit last year in response to it being overwhelmingly popular in the recent years. We are further limiting the entries again this year to 600 with no on the day but we expect to sell out prior to that.

So please enter early on the following link: https://bookitzone.com/phil_tordoff_1/tb2FFX

Postal entry form here, but please bear in mind how quickly the event is filling up (75% in 3 days) that online is the quickest way to confirm your entry2017 Askern 10km Entry Form (v1)
