Run your heart out 10k in the not so sunny Scunny. There was no real need to warm up for the start, as the start line was a good 15 minute walk from the race HQ.
The weather forecast of wind and rain looked to be a Michael Fish esque failed prediction. While the sky looked heavy there was very little wind as we lined up for a long straight start on the residential Scotter Road.
After a 10 second count down we were off down Scotter Road, ready to turn right at the Asda, and then out into the sticks for a round flat loop down country roads, before re-appearing on Scotter Road and on to an Atheltics track/stadium for an Olympic marathon style finish.
About 1 mile in, the buildings disappeared and we were out on exposed country roads. It suddenly became apparent that actually Michael Fish didn’t get it that wrong after all. The flat Lincolnshire open countryside was allowing a strong sweeping wind to come sideways at you almost ripping my number from my Askern vest. Battling on and over one of the only 2 hills over the M181 motorway, the encouraging beeps of car horns underneath spurred us on. At around 4k the road turned and all of a sudden Hurricane Chardonnay ( a fitting hurricane name for Scunny) was behind us, pushing us on. It was a welcome relief, a relief that was short lived as after another 1/2 km we turned agian, and the sidewinder wind certainly wasn’t sleeping tonight. Only this time it was hitting from the other side It was around this point that the 2nd half of the prediction came true as the rain arrived.
Finally at 7.5km we were back on Scotter Road and the welcome relief of shelter from the wind. It was around this point that the 2nd half of the prediction came true as the wind arrived.
Onto the athletics stadium and a final push around the track for a welcome finish.
All in all it was a nice flat course, and under different weather conditions it would be a potential pb course.
